Suspension: Nwuche faults opposition’s support for Amaechi
JUNE 3, 2013
A former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Prince Chibudom Nwuche, has criticised opposition parties over their reactions to the suspension of the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, by the Peoples Democratic Party.
Nwuche, in an interview with journalists in Abuja on Saturday, faulted the All Progressives Congress for its support for a PDP governor.
Some merging parties in the APC had, last week, criticised the PDP for suspending Amaechi.
While the Congress for Progress Change said the ruling party was sinking, the All Nigeria Peoples Party stated that Amaechi’s suspension was an affront to democracy.
On Saturday, the former House of Representatives deputy speaker said the opposition parties should concern themselves with their objective of displacing the PDP.
He said, “If these people (opposition parties) are organizing themselves to displace the PDP, they should focus on that.
“They should not be concerned about the PDP internal affairs. If the PDP is going astray, they should not be the ones to remind the PDP. That will help them at the polls.”
Nwuche said there should be discipline in politics, adding that members should not undermine their parties.
He stated, “I can’t remain in a party and undermine that party. If at a point I feel that the PDP is not meeting my aspiration, I should have the boldness to leave the party and go somewhere else.”
Meanwhile, five members of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to the Minister of State for Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike, have disagreed with the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties over the suspension of Amaechi from the PDP.
While the lawmakers insisted that Amaechi should have been expelled from the PDP, the CNPP said the governor did not deserve being sacked from the party.
Spokesman for the five anti-Amaechi lawmakers, Mr. Evans Bibi, said the governor had begun to hobnob with the opposition and deserved to be expelled from the PDP for anti-party activities.
But the State Chairman of the CNPP, Dr. Manaigbi Dagogo-Jack, said it would be wrong for the PDP at the national level to expel Amaechi from the party since there was a court injunction restraining the party from taking further action against him (Amaechi).
