Ogun loses N250m monthly to fake haulage tickets

The Ogun State Government said on Thursday it was losing about N250m every month to touts issuing fake haulage tickets and carrying out other illegal activities in the state.
The Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Bimbo Ashiru, who disclosed this at the Haulage Stakeholders’ Forum attended by the representatives of Lafarge Cement WAPCO Plc, Dangote Cement Plc, Nestle Nigeria Plc, Julius Berger Plc and others in Abeokuta, said ticketing touts had been operating in 10 different locations across the state.
Ashiru said the introduction and operation of a unified haulage ticket in July would effectively address the problem of fake haulage ticketing in the state.
He said, “I can tell you authoritatively that we have lost billions of naira. The young people I caught this morning had by 8am made N50,000. I remember when we arrested some people at Papalanto over those fake tickets, they had made over N100,000 just within three hours in the morning and they were there throughout the day.
“You can imagine them making nothing less than N500,000 everyday and you can multiply that by 30 days.
“There are over 10 locations where illegal haulage ticketing is taking place in the state. In a month, over N250m is going away on fake haulage ticketing; we want to block all these loopholes where haulage revenues are going to, we have introduced cashless way of payment. This will automatically reduce corruption.”
The commissioner said the introduction of the Ogun Government Unified Haulage Tickets was aimed at saving investors and haulage operators from multiple levies they were hitherto paying, adding that it would also protect investors against multiple levies and also save them from falling victims to fake ticketing.
Ashiru said the unified ticketing regime would block financial leakages, thereby shoring up government’s revenue from haulage.
