The simmering feud between South-South Leader, Chief Edwin Clark and his “son” Elder Godsday Orubebe, the Minister of Niger Delta affairs took a dangerous dimension at the weekend, as the Delta State PDP Elders, Leaders and Stakeholders forum angrily accused him of wanting Chief Clark dead, just as they also drag the Minister to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
However, various groups supporting the embattled Minister have in the last few weeks, accused Chief Clark for his penchant to bring down his “political children” including, Chief James Ibori, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, Chief Wellington Okrika, Delta State PDP Chairman, Bar. Peter Nwaoboshi, Dr. Peter Odili, President Goodluck Jonathan, late Dr. Richard Tosanwumi and several others.
The quarrel between “father and son” began a few weeks ago when the former Minister of Information, severely criticized Elder Orubebe for his alleged statement that, it was the turn of the Ijaws to produce the next Governor of Delta State, describing the statement as careless and irresponsible.
Chief Clark who also dismissed the governorship ambition of Hon. Victor Ochie, and appealed to those he described as “youth men” who have made so much money to desist from insulting Mr. President, the Ijaws and himself for no justifiable reason. The state PDP chairman, Bar Nwaoboshi, who was present at the briefing, endorsed Chief Clark’s position.
However, hell was let loose since this statement was made by Chief Clark, despite a recent statement by Elder Orubebe that, “Chief Clark is the leader of Ijaw people, he is a father and he will remain so, and our relationship is still cordial. We work together for the interest of the Ijaw people and the interest of the state.”
But the Chief Clark-led Delta Elders, responded a few days later saying, “Orubebe is like a “CROWN” Prince who wants the father who is the king dead, for him to mount the throne, went to the market square, to attack Chief Clark in the name of various fictitious, unregistered and non-existent groups to bite the finger that fed him, as replicated in various publications…”
They said further, “Can a child who wants the father dead to inherit his wealth, understand what fate hold’s for him? Can a child who wants to drag his father to the market square with lies to humiliate him, have peace and prosperity in his endeavours? Time and not man will unveil this riddle”
This was followed with a petition to the EFCC signed by Chief Godwin Ogbetuo, Dr. Brown Adasen, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, Wing Commander Biakpara, Col G.A Eboma(rtd) and 23 others accusing the Minister of persistent corrupt practices, flagrant and continued disobedience of laws of the land.
Among the accusations levelled against the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs included;
“That Godsday Orubebe came from a very small community of Ogboaghene in Burutu local government council, and spent on a worthless canalization project which connects to nowhere, at a cost of N1.2billion and equally spent over N3billion on building a concrete foreshore wall in his village, using contractors who are posing for him, with a view of appropriating the money to himself.
“The Delta Elders also want the EFCC to investigate the ownership of a one billion naira house built on Plot 1380 in Mabushi (BO6) in Abuja. They claimed that the property belongs to Elder Orubebe, who secured the services of a construction company known as Setraco, working in the East-West road to build for him, a magnificent building on a plot, at no personal cost which he acquired from the FCT Minister.
The Delta Elders appealed to the EFCC to live up to its billing on Elder Orubebe and prove to all Nigerians that there are no sacred cow, in its bid to eradicate corruption from Nigeria, concluding that, corruption breeds violence, war, economic inequality and political instability”.
