The empowerment programme of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, will get a boost soon as the commission is set to release various equipment and tools to the youths of the Niger Delta.
The Acting Managing Director, Dr Christi Atako announced this shortly after inspecting NDDC warehouses in Port Harcourt.
Passing as her first official assignment after meeting with the Commission’s management and staffs, Dr. Atako Addressing journalists in her office shortly after inspection the warehouses stated that materials procured for specific programmes should not be left in the warehouse for too long to the detriment of the full realization of the objectives set out for them.
The items inside the warehouses inspected included electrical equipment such as transformers and support accessories, sewing machines, computers and printers, grinding machines, baking ovens agricultural tractors meant to be distributed to the nine states in the Niger Delta amongst others.
On sighting agricultural equipment like tractors, she stated vehemently that such equipment have have no business sitting idle in a warehouse when agricultural fields were waiting to be tilled and directed that immediate steps be taken to get the states that had not collected their tractors to do so without further delay.
She promised however that management would take the necessary steps to facilitate the distribution of the equipment and tools to the relevant groups in the region since it was necessary to decongest the warehouses as soon as possible.
The aim of the inspection according to the acting NDDC boss, was to help the interim management to take informed decisions that would reposition the interventionist agency to increase the tempo of its activities in providing sustainable development.
Meanwhile, the acting NDDC boss called on management and staff of the commission to make the vision of the NDDC their driving force by showing more dedication, discipline and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
She stated this while addressing management and staff at a maiden general meeting, where she reminded them that God has entrusted them with the task of developing the Niger Delta region.
She hinted that staff should be determined more than ever before in carrying out their responsibility, noting that the purpose of setting up the NDDC is to raise the standard of infrastructural development in the Niger Delta region.
She urged staff to be punctual, avoid absenteeism and to be properly dressed to work and advice the staff to be above board in dealing with contractors and shun any form of corrupt practices as she promised to attend to staff welfare promptly.
