The five aggrieved northern state governors on platform of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are gunning for the vice president slot in 2015 at the expense of the incumbent, Namadi Sambo.
This was disclosed yesterday in Abuja by the convener of the National Unity Project (NUP), a group pushing for the re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015, Mr. Igwekala Ugomaduefule.
Ugomaduefule told journalists in Abuja yesterday that the five governors, Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State, Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State, Suleh Lamido (Jigawa), Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu (Niger) and Murtala Nyako (Adamawa) have two missions: to become Jonathan’s running mate and to mislead the president to commit a political blunder.
He however asked them to forget it because, “There is no vacancy for the position of the vice president” or any chances of the Jonathan replacing Sambo as his running mate.
He argued that since the First Republic till date, no democratically elected Nigerian president has abandoned his deputy as running mate during his second term bid, and Jonathan must not be pressured to make the mistake.
He said: “I want to say that the so called four or five governors touring the country in the name of northern president or whatever is a ruse. There real missions are two: one they are seeking for the office of the vice president, which I am here to tell you that it is not vacant. It can never be vacant because it has never happened in the country. From the time of Tafawa Abubakar Balewa as the prime minister to the present, none of them has ever abandoned his vice president as running mate, it has never happened.
