The All Progressive Congress (APC) has said it will be another setback for Nigeria in 2015 if a visionless leader is allowed to occupy the presidency.
Through its interim national chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, the new party asserts that in view of the level decay in the polity, only a “thinking leadership” will return the country to the path of progress.
Akande who spoke on sundry national issues yesterday, faulted the leadership style of President Goodluck Jonathan, describing him as a “kindergarten leader”.
He told journalists in his country home in Ila-Orangun, Osun State, that media reports suggesting that the APC was not keen about the 2015 presidential election, were incorrect.
Speaking further on Jonathan’s leadership quality, Akande declared: “I have many reasons not to admire Jonathan. I have had meetings with him since 2011. I have had a long conversation with him once and, on all these occasions, I did not find him to be a serious-minded leader. I can say boldly that Nigeria’s problem today is Jonathan; it would have been easier if Nigeria had a thinking leadership in Jonathan.
“I have written him (President Jonathan) twice; he never had the courtesy to acknowledge any of them, and I discussed serious business in the letters what to do to move Nigeria forward. That shows me that he treats national issues with levity.”
The APC chairman feared that President Jonathan’s 2015 re-election ambition may destroy Nigeria because “his major concern now is his third term return to the presidency and he has therefore reduced Nigerian government to kindergarten governance”.
Akande said the APC is committed to sacking the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from office in 2015, adding that “it is a task that will be achieved by our party”.
“I was misquoted by the media on APC’s preparations for 2015: what I actually said was that our pre-occupation as an interim leadership of the party was to mobilise and register members, conduct congresses and convention to establish a good structure for the new party, and that the priority for now is the Anambra State governorship election and possibly Delta State senatorial poll,” Akande stated.
On his alleged invitation to President Jonathan to join the APC because of his leadership qualities, Akande said that he only said that the door of APC was open to whosoever might wish to join it, including President Jonathan if he was fed up with the crisis in his party, but “Jonathan does not possess what it takes to lead Nigeria successfully”.
“He treats national issues with levity. All he is concerned about is his third term ambition. He has reduced the totality of Nigeria to kindergarten governance. Today, Jonathan is the most powerful president in the world. He has all the powers arrogated to him and he’s still asking for more,” Akande added.
