LASU Killings: Lagos Assembly Wants Fashola To Fortify Security
Sequel to the activities of cultists at the Lagos State University, (LASU) that led to the killing of two students, the State House of Assembly on Tuesday called on Governor BabatundeFashola to as a matter of urgency fortify security to save the lives of the people in the area.
This was raised on the floor during the plenary session by Hon. Sanai Agunbiade representing Ikorodu constituency 1.
According to him, “I want to call the attention of the House to the activities of cultists in LASU which led to the killings of two students. Though, the police say they have arrested about 70 students in connection with the incident, it is not enough as cultist from other institutions can come in solidarity with their members; and it could spread to the neighbourhood and create confusion”.
He wondered why there is a resurgence of student cultism in LASU which had gone down considerable in the institution in the past years.
The lawmaker suggested that the governor should fortify security around the school to save the lives of students and people around it.
Contributing, Hon. Alawiye King who is the chairman, House Committee on Education said they have contacted the Vice Chancellor but could not reach him.
Deputy Leader, Hon. Lola Akande blamed the development on the loss of societal values, adding that there is no home training. “Parents no longer have time to take care of their children. The government also has a role to play to ease things for parents so that they can have more time to take care of their children”, Akande said.
On His part, Hon. OlawarenjuOshun added that it is better to beef up security around the school than to shut it down temporarily, saying it would affect students’ academic activities.
After series of debate, the House therefore resolves to call on Governor BabatundeFashola to as a matter of urgency fortify security around the school to save lives of the people. It would be recalled that barely three days after a final year Banking and Finance student of the Lagos State University, LASU, DamilolaOlaniyan (alias Damoche), was killed by suspected cultists, another undergraduate student simply identified as KabiruAtoyebi, also shot dead.
