Immigration’s money-for-employment policy in order –Minister

OCTOBER 29, 2013

Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro
Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro, on Monday described those faulting the decision of the Nigeria Immigration Service to charge each job applicant N1,000 as lacking in understanding of the service’s workings.
The minister who spoke with State House correspondents described the criticisms as “misplaced and misguided.”
He said his ministry was fair to the applicants because some other agencies charge as much as N2,000 to access their recruitment portals unlike that of the NIS that charges only N1, 000.
Moro added that the ministry  followed  due  process by consulting with the Federal Character Commission and other government agencies that were engaged in similar exercises before arriving at the cost.
He said, “Maybe for the umpteenth time, I will let you know that some of these criticisms are misplaced, misguided and borne out of misinformation and clear lack of understanding of the situation in the Nigerian Immigration Service.
“I have promised Nigerians that in the face of the controversy that trailed the last immigration exercise of recruitment that we are going to enthrone a more transparent and cost effective system. This is what we have done.
“What we have done has passed through the processes that are required to engage an external consultant in processing the applications of these intending recruits and of course you know that from time on a monthly basis the Nigerian Police, the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigerian Navy have been engaged in this e-recruitment portal and I don’t see anything that is exceptional in the situation in the Nigerian Immigration Service.
“I want Nigerians to know that today the Army recruits, the Air Force recruits, the Navy recruits, the Police recruits, virtually on a monthly basis and they charge token amount of money for portals.
“I want Nigerians also to crosscheck the amount of money that is paid by other agencies to access these portals which is a minimum of N2, 000.”
