SSANU Threatens Strike over Non-payment of Allowances

...Gives FG Friday ultimatum to pay

SSANU President, Mr. Samson Ugwoke
Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has said that non academic of staff of universities may go on strike if the Federal Government failed to pay the August salaries of  its workers.

The President of SSANU, Mr. Samson Ugwoke, in a statement on Wednesday, gave the FG a Friday ultimatum to pay the allowances.
He said major unions in the universities such as the National Association of Academic Technology and the Non Academic Staff of Universities and other Allied Institutions under the Joint Action Committee of SSANU would also join the strike if the government failed to pay the salary deadline.

He lamented that Federal Government had no reason to delay the payment of the salaries till the second week of September.

"The Federal Government of Nigeria should pay the salaries of federal university workers without further delay. Today is 11 September 2013 and the August 2013 allocations to federal universities are yet to be released and no one has given reasons for the delay. This situation is unhealthy, unbearable and it is bringing untold hardship to the workers, their families and dependents.

“SSANU and other sister unions in the Joint Action Committee of SSANU, NAAT and NASU will be forced to seriously review their stand with the Federal Government if by Friday 13 September, 2013 the salaries of our members are not paid.
"This is September when children will be going to school and are expected to pay all kinds of fees, but the government has decided to seize our salaries. The workers need money to send their children back to school," the statement read in part.
