Police in Bayelsa State have yet to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of  a 27-year-old girl, allegedly killed by her boyfriend and dumped into a river.
The lover boy was said to be an employee of a construction company in the state.
A police source said on condition of anonymity that the authorities had launched a manhunt for the suspect.
He said the girl was killed on Tuesday at Kaima in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of the state.
A source, who gave her name as Adaorie, claimed that the suspect and the deceased were lovers.
Adaorie said, “The corpse of the girl was discovered by some indigenes who had gone for early morning bath at the river.
“On the day she was allegedly murdered, we heard she had gone to visit her lover at his work place only to discover her corpse the following day at the the river.”
Another source, who did not want his name mentioned, said the incident occurred at 6.30am on the fateful day.
The source said, “The corpse of the girl was discovered by people who went to take their bath at the waterside.
“They discovered that the girl had machete cuts on her body. I think the man thought the river would wash her away but this was not so as her body was found near the river bank at Kaima.”
It was further learnt that the lover, after allegedly discovering that the corpse of the lady had been found, went to his supervisor to convince him that his mother was seriously sick.
It was gathered that the supervisor granted him permission to go and tend to his sick mother, unknown to him that he was escaping because of what had transpired.
When contacted, spokesman for Bayelsa State Police Command, Mr. Alex Akhigbe, confirmed the incident.
He said operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department had launched a manhunt for the estranged lover.
“We are investigating the matter and the police are hunting for the man accused of killing her,” he said.
