NYSC DG charges corps members to be security conscious
The Director-General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Nnamdi Okore-Affia, on Thursday charged corps members to be their brothers’ keepers in their places of primary assignment.
Okore-Affia spoke at the swearing-in ceremony of 2,323 Batch`A’ corps members for 2013, posted to Lagos State at the NYSC orientation camp in Iyana-Ipaja.
He urged the corps members to study emergency information and pay attention to security tips contained in their handbook.
The DG advised the corps members to accept their postings in good faith, adapt to the host communities and contribute to the development of the states in which they find themselves.
He charged the members to obey all rules and regulations of the scheme and be law abiding as they would be prosecuted if they committed crimes.
``I congratulate you for being part of this scheme; the camp is a training ground, there is no comfort in the camp like your homes, so obey all camp rules.
``Adapt to the environment in which you find yourselves and participate in all camp activities. Do your best, be at the right place at the right time and be disciplined.
``Do not go to a village and attempt to change their belief, female corps members should understand native dressing of their host communities and dress decently,’` he said.
Mrs. Adenike Adeyemi, NYSC Coordinator, Lagos State, said that 946 male and 1377 female corps members registered to participate in the orientation course.
Adeyemi said that the corps member would, in the next three weeks, be exposed to paramilitary drills, physical fitness exercises, unarmed combat and martial arts, as well as skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development.
She said that the orientation course was aimed at instilling leadership qualities in the corps members and giving them the ability to live amicably with others, under any circumstance.
``The national service is designed to set you on course, produce influencers, high achievers, professionals, hard workers and believers in a great and united nation,`` she said.
President Goodluck Jonathan, in his message, urged the corps members to shun corruption and other vices, while embracing integrity and humility.
The president’s message was delivered by the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Dr Aderanti Adebule, who stood in for Gov. Babatunde Fashola.
Jonathan urged the corps members to see themselves as agents of the transformation agenda.
``To be great leaders of tomorrow, you must lay a solid foundation today,’` he said.
