Impeachment: Embattled Imo Deputy governor fights back

Impeachment: Embattled Imo Deputy governor fights back. Jude Agbaso.
As a way of warding off the impeachment problem hanging over his head, Imo State Deputy Governor Jude Agbaso has today filed a suit at the Federal High Court, Owerri, to stop the impeachment process against him. Agbaso is asking the court to suspend the impeachment process by the Imo House of Assembly against him.
An ad-hoc committee set up by the house to investigate an allegation of demand and receipt of N458 million bribe from a Lebanese road contractor in the state had already indicted Agbaso.
However, the deputy governor prayed the court to stop the process due to lack of fair hearing by the Simeon Iwunze-led Committee that investigated him.
The court has set March 18 for hearing of the case.
During its Wednesday plenary, 25 of the 27 members of the house formally endorsed the deputy governor’s impeachment. The house further asked the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Benjamin Njemanze, to constitute a seven-man panel to re-investigate the N458 million contract scam as provided in Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
The house had earlier passed a motion to serve the impeachment notice on the deputy governor by substituted means.
