The medical association said the government should declare public holidays for free medical check-up.
Following the sudden death of former Ondo state governor, Olusegun Agagu, the Nigerian Medical Association has called on Ondo state government to declare a public holiday dedicated to free health check-up for citizens of Ondo State.
The president of the association, Osahon Enabulele, said the exercise will help minimize the incidence of Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and sudden deaths in the state and the country.
He also called on the federal government to also declare a public holiday for health check-ups in Nigeria, at least once a year.
Mr. Agagu slumped on Friday barely 24hours after returning from vacation in the United States of America, while reports so far indicate he was hypertensive and diabetic.
According to Mr. Enabulele, the medical check-up would be a way of immortalising the late governor whom he described as a great son of the state.
He said the NMA was prepared to partner with the Ondo state government for the exercise.
While consoling the Agagu family, the government and people of the state over Mr. Agagu’s death, he called on Nigerians to collaborate with the association to promote the Campaign On Healthy Living which was recently launched.
“The circumstances of his unfortunate death also reignites our fervent call on Nigerians to cultivate the right habit of consulting their licensed medical doctor/dentist for periodic health check-ups in view of its benefits, which includes reduction in the spine-chilling incidence of sudden deaths amongst Nigeria’s productive men and women” he said.
