The university settles for foreigners after Nigerian academics would agree to work for it for fear of Boko Haram.
The Yobe state government has employed 35 Professors from India and Philippines for the Yobe State University, located in Damaturu, the state capital, after Nigerian academics wouldn’t accept appointments in the institution due to security challenges.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Musa Alabe, made this known to the state governor during a visit to the institution, where he revealed that “the first badge of the professors he hired would arrive the state capital this weekend.”
Prof Alabe noted that the institution was left with no choice than to resort to international recruitment because series of advertisement in national newspapers for qualified academic staff for the institution failed to attract Nigerian academics to the university.
Yobe state, in the northeast part of Nigeria, is one of the states that have suffered attacks by members of the extreme Boko Haram sect, with a number of attack directed at schools.
The state is also currently under a state of emergency declared by President Goodluck Jonathan to address the security challenge in the country.
According to him, “the decision to employ the Asian Professors is to further improve the standards of teaching and learning in the various fields of academic endeavour in the institution.”
Professor Alabe, who conducted the governor round the law faculty of the institution said 21 of the professors were from India while 14 others were from the Philippines.
He thanked the governor for granting approval for the employment of the professors pointing out the gesture would greatly enrich the quality of education in the institution.
In his remark, the state governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, commended the school’s administration for the development of facilities and announced a donation of N30 million to upgrade the law faculty’s library.
He directed that the library be stocked with the latest law books that would improve learning and research in the university.
