The police also rescued 9 of the victims.
The Police Command in Rivers said it killed 16 kidnap suspects in shoot-outs and arrested 63 suspects in August.
The Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mbu, who said this at a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Thursday, said that 29 suspects had been charged to the court.
Mr. Mbu said that 16 cases of kidnap were reported to the command, adding that nine victims out of the 16 cases were rescued, while two were killed by their abductors.
The commissioner said the command recovered 38 guns, including 10 AK 47, two pump action, 25 locally-made guns and 20 snatched vehicles. He added that they also recovered eight magazines and several calibres of live ammunitions, machetes, cutters, laptops and mobile phones from the suspects during the period.
Mr. Mbu said that crime was on the decline in the state, and appealed to the public to furnish the police with useful information that could lead to the arrest of criminals.
He advised those whose vehicles were snatched to come to the command with proof of ownership to claim them.
He described as `unfortunate’, the shooting of a taxi driver in Port Harcourt by a prison guard on September 6, adding that the prison officer was at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
The guard, who was reported to be escorting suspects back from the court, allegedly shot the taxi driver because he drove on the wrong lane.
