ASUU commenced a nationwide strike on July 1.
The National Progressive Movement of Nigeria (NPMN) has called on the Federal Government and striking university lecturers to embrace dialogue and end the ongoing strike.
The call is contained in a statement, signed by the Chairman of the socio-cultural group, Misbaudeen Adekojo, in Ogbomoso on Saturday.
Mr. Adekojo said there was need for early resolution of the controversial issues in order to end the strike, noting that there was need for government to provide more funds for the education sector.
He said the problem of unemployment and crime was on the increase, due to the closure of schools as a result of the strike. He urged government to find ways to resolve the problems in the education sector.
The ongoing strike, which commenced on July 1, was as a result of government’s inability to implement an agreement it entered into with the lecturers, ASUU, in 2009.
The union adopted a resolution to go on strike after its national executive council meeting, held at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, in Ogun last June.
Government has, however, assured through the Minister of Education, Ruqayyatu Rufa’i, that it was working hard to resolve the impasse.
