Security officer killed in IMT students’ election

IMT Enugu
A security officer attached to the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu, Mr. Festus Eze, has died after being hit on the head during a student election of the Department of Science Laboratory Technology in the institute.
PUNCH Metro learnt from IMT’s management that the late Eze was among those deployed to forestall violence during the election on Tuesday.
Activities in most departments were paralysed when our correspondent visited the school on Wednesday.
A student (name withheld) of the affected department disclosed that trouble started when some students who felt the election was not going in their favour came in to disrupt it.
“The late security officer tried to stop them from disrupting the election; in the ensuing crisis, one of the students reached for a concrete pole and hit the officer on the head.
“He fainted immediately and people started running. Some tried to revive him by pouring water on him, but he was later rushed to a hospital,” the student said.
The Enugu State Police Command said it had commenced investigation into the incident.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, said Eze wasn’t only hit on the head but was beaten up by yet-to-be identified group of students during the departmental election.
“He was rushed to Memfims Hospital in Trans-Ekulu, Enugu but confirmed dead by the doctor on duty. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the mortuary in Ntasiobi Specialist Hospital, also in Enugu, for autopsy,” the PPRO said.
IMT Rector, Prof. Mike Iloeje, had earlier confirmed the security officer’s death.
“The development is indeed a sad one. We have lodged a formal report to the police. We are expecting them to make enquiry into the incident and take necessary action,” Iloeje had said.
