‘Powerful people in government behind plot against APC’, Ikimi says

Top members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who were named in the plot to stop the registration of the newly formed All Progressives Congress (APC) are just small fries when compared with the real elements involved in the inglorious act. And the real actors would surely be revealed in the fullness of time.
This is the position of a chieftain of the Action Congress of
Nigeria (ACN) and one of the strong pillars behind the formation of the new mega party High Chief Tom Ikimi. He said people like Olisa Metuh and others named in the scandal are just messengers to those behind it.

Ikimi who spoke exclusively to Daily Times in a telephone interview today said himself and other leaders of APC were not surprised when the reports were published in the media.
He said they have always known where the move was coming from, following the outcome of the investigation they carried out internally.
“I am not surprised by the news. By our own previous investigations before our last press conference, we had always known that those people parading themselves as leaders of the so- called All Peoples Congress were just mere agents of some desperate persons in the establishment,” Ikimi said.
According to him, the ruling party has been stunned by the emergence of APC in the political landscape of Nigeria, the reason why it has been plotting all manners of dubious antics to derail the process of its confirmation.
“Needless to say that the PDP is scared stiff by the emergence of the new mega party, the APC. The names now released to the press of the conspirators which are all of the PDP including the person of Olisa Metuh are only a handful of the real culprits.
“There are some more bigger in the PDP family that are desperately pushing this line of action, but in the fullness of time, it would all come out,” the former Foreign Affairs Minister said.
It would be recalled that a revelation has been made recently, that some top PDP members were behind the letter said to have been written to INEC for the registration of a party known as All Peoples Congress.
The party’s acronym APC was said to have been coined in order to thwart the plan of the newly formed All Progressive Congress which came out of a planned merger by some opposition political parties in order to form a formidable front for future elections in the country.
A lawyer, Samuel Chinedu was also reported to have confessed that a PDP member who is notorious for doing dirty hatchet job, Ikenga Ugochinyere hired him to file documents in INEC seeking registration of the All Peoples Congress.
The report named PDP National Publicity Secretary Olisa Metuh, former National Working Committee member Baraje Kawu and former Minister for Information John Odey as some of those behind the plot.
On Thursday, Ugochinyere hurriedly launched the fake APC and went ahead to release a press statement alleging that some gunmen were after his life.
