NLC Urges Passage Of Bill On Violence Against Women

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the National Assembly to pass into law the bill on violence against women and girls.
It lamented that Nigeria’s legal system does not make prosecution of perpetrators of violence against women easy and stressed the need to pass a law that protects the rights of women.
At an event to mark the International Women Day in Abuja, NLC president, Abdulwaheed Omar, said despite growing awareness on the plight of women, women have continued to suffer both in peace time and armed conflict.
“These come in form of beating in their homes, rape, incest, traditional practice such as genital mutilation, boy child preference, early marriage, sexual abuse, trafficking, forced prostitution” he said.
He said further, our laws should be corrected so that they make provisions for sanction on men who perpetrated violence against women”
He said it is unfortunate that majority of the world’s 1.3 billion absolute poor are women. The NLC president reiterated that the union body will continue to be proactive in the protection and defence of women against any form of violence especially in the workplace.
