vanThe robbers attacked because they thought the van contained money.
A bank official was killed in an armed robbery attack in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Wednesday.
The armed robbers had laid ambush for the police escorts and the bank official’s bullion van, because they perceived there was money in the van.
The robbers, after they opened fire on the men, found no money in the van, a source told PREMIUM TIMES.
The source said the police escorts responded swiftly to the attack and forced the robbers to flee; but the bank official had been shot dead.
The van had gone on a journey to a branch of a new generation bank at Igbokoda and was returning to the branch at Akure, the state capital.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officers for the Ondo State Command, Wole Ogodo, said the bank official died in a hospital from gunshot injuries.
The police spokesperson dismissed speculations that a police officer was killed in the incident.
He said the command is on the trail of the robbers who sustained injuries from the gun duel.
