Party condemns Patience Jonathan’s alleged directive to Police Commissioner to free armed youth
The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has blamed the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for Monday’s bombing of the Ahoada East High Court in the state.
In a statement by Chukwuemeka Eze, media aide to the APC chairman in the state, the party alleged that the Education Minister, Nyesom Wike, had consistently condemned last year’s ruling of the court in which a member of the House, Evans Bipi, was ordered to stop parading himself as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The court presided by Justice Charles Wali had fixed January 6 for further hearing on the suit brought by the House Speaker, Otelemaba Amachree, against Mr. Bipi.
However, just before the hearing commenced, an explosive went off in the court premises. Two others were reportedly detonated by the police.
APC described the incident as unfortunate and sad, saying it showed desperation by the PDP to turn the state into a theatre of violence.
“It is on record that the Rivers State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) sponsored by Chief Nyesom Wike, the Supervising Minister of Education, has over the time condemned this ruling of the Ahoada East High Court because it threw a spanner in its plot to use the rebel lawmakers led by Bipi to impeach Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi in a House of 32 members,” APC said.
The party said it wondered if bombing the court would make Mr. Bipi, who leads a group of six rebel lawmakers, the Assembly Speaker. It added that it had expected the group to challenge the ruling of the court instead of sponsoring an act that exposed them as agents of violence.
“The record exposing the agenda of this misguided group for Rivers State and her people as violence prone was exhibited few days ago when security agencies in Rivers State caught six youths with various sophisticated and dangerous arms at Ogu the home town of Senator Sekibo and Hon Bipi. The suspects have been linked to Senator George Sekibo and Hon. Evans Bipi, both chieftains of the state chapter of the PDP led by Chief Wike, the Supervising Minister of Education, whose determination to destabilise the administration of Governor Amaechi is well known to all and sundry,” APC alleged.
APC asked President Goodluck Jonathan to use his good offices to call members of the Rivers State PDP to order before they plunged the state into a monumental and unprecedented chaos that could disrupt the nation’s democracy.
APC also described as most unfortunate an order allegedly given by the First Lady, Patience Jonathan, to the state Police Commissioner, Joseph Mbu, to release the six youth reportedly caught with illegal arms.
“We expect (Mbu) for the interest of Rivers State and the image of our dear country not only arraign these youth being used by these misguided politicians to terrorise innocent people of Rivers State before a competent court but ensure that those behind them are brought to book accordingly,” the spokesperson said.
