Sekibo resigns as ACN reverses Rivers exco suspension
JUNE 7, 2013
THE crisis rocking the Action Congress of Nigeria, Rivers State chapter, took a fresh turn on Thursday when the leader of the party, Dr. Abiye Sekibo, announced his resignation from the opposition party.
Sekibo, in a short letter addressed to the National Chairman of the ACN, Chief Bisi Akande, said his resignation was based on personal reasons.
The ACN had been in crisis in the last two weeks, even as members had continued to accuse each other of selling out to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party.
Sekibo’s resignation was coming on the heels of the alleged suspension of the National Treasurer of the party. State Acting Chairman of the party, Mr. Esuku Esuku, was suspended on Tuesday for his alleged involvement in anti-party activities.
But Sekibo, in his resignation letter, did not disclose his next line of action, even as he wished his friends and colleagues in the opposition party well.
The former ACN leader was a governorship candidate in the 2011 governorship election in Rivers State.
“This is to inform you that I have by this letter resigned my membership of the Action Congress of Nigeria with effect from June 5, 2013. I wish all my friends and colleagues, who are still in the party, well,” Sekibo said.
Meanwhile, the National Executive Committee of the ACN has overruled the suspension of a national officer by the Rivers State Executive Committee, saying the suspension violates the party’s constitution.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said going by the ACN Constitution, no state executive committee could suspend any national officer of the party.
“In view of this, the status quo remains and we enjoin all our members to allow peace to reign. If anyone has any grievances, the Constitution of the party is clear on what to do,’’ it said, threatening to sanction any member who failed to adhere to the party’s stand on the suspension.
