Lagos community bemoans state of federal road

Ijebu Ode-Itokin Road
Residents of Parafa, a suburb of Ikorodu in Ikorodu Local Government, area of Lagos State, say they are weary of the condition of the road linking Sabo to Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State. They described the road as a “death trap.”
The residents, who noted that the highway was a Federal Government road, said it had brought more harm than good to road users. They added that there were more ditches and potholes than smooth surface on the road.
Parafa community leader, Mr. Ademola Jaiyesimi, said a lot of accidents had occurred in the area between January and June 2013, especially at night.
He said, “I no longer go out in my car because the condition of that road is terrible. There is no day that at least two vehicles do not get stuck or be involved in accident since January this year. In fact, wise drivers no longer ply that road; instead they climb the walkway  and that part is also getting bad.
“It is a Federal Government road and the FG’s impact is not felt on the road. We continue to pour sand on the road through self effort, but it just keeps getting worse, especially with the rains.”
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the road had brought suffering and pain to not only residents, but also road users who made use of it on daily basis.
He said he had spent three hours for a journey that should normally take five minutes on the road.
He said, “This could be said to be the worst road in this area. It had brought nothing but pain and suffering to the residents and the road users. The first week I moved to this area, I changed so many things in my car.
“A lot of people make use of this road such as those travelling to near and far states, those going to Epe, Ajah and Lekki areas apart from the residents. But the sad thing is there is no road for us to pass through, but a gully.”
He added that some of the firms in the area tried a palliative measure on the road but had to stop when they were slammed with law suits.
An octogenarian, identified simply as Baba, said he no longer bothered to go out anymore.
He urged the state government to intervene if the Federal Government did not respond to the cries of the residents.
He said, “Going out with the condition of the road means giving myself headache. The road is too rough and tiring.
“Either the Federal Government or Lagos State Government should do something about this road. The people are suffering.”
