North/South Parley May End Terrorism In Nigeria – Wamakko
Sokoto State Governor Alhaji Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko has said that it was time the southern states rallied round the north in addressing the knotty problem of terrorism afflicting the zone in the interest of national unity.
He also sued for peace in Nigeria, especially in the northern parts of the country in the New Year. The Governor stated that the progress and development of Nigeria could only be attained in an atmosphere devoid of rancour, violence and general apathy by Nigerians.
He made this known in a chat, yesterday, just as he predicted an end to terrorism.
He said that Nigeria would not progress as a nation in the absence of peace and progress in the north, and noted that any part of the country that experienced pain deserved the attention of the other parts since, according to him, the pain if not checked on time would spread to the whole parts.
The north, Wamakko stressed, required the logistics and spiritual support of the southern states to end the menace of terrorism in the country just the north rallied round the south when it was afflicted with activities of militants in the Niger Delta area, separatists movement (MASSOB) in the south-east and that of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) in the south-west.
The northern governors, he observed, have not been resting on their oars in ensuring that terrorism came to an end in the north where it is most prevalent, and stated that efforts were on to network with their colleagues in the south on how to collectively resolve the challenge.
Expressing appreciation for the understanding Nigerians have so far showing in the face of provocation by some terrorist groups, the Sokoto State governor urged clerics generally to continue to preach peace, unity and understanding among Nigerians as part of efforts aimed at drawing down the strength of terrorists in the country.
He said that his government, over the years, has been showing examples by encouraging harmony and peaceful co-existence among the people of the state in which case, non-indigenes have been enjoying their stay without any form of molestation while they operate under the same law as others unrestrained.
Wamakko said that to promote the value of peace and progress in Sokoto state and the rest of the north, his government was intensifying efforts on how to host a mother of all Durbar in the state later in the year, meant to attract tourists from across the world if only to show-case the value of Sokoto State in Islamic services, as a place of peace and harmony.
The Durbar, he noted, would be held annually being the first of its kind in Africa south of Sahara, just as the event being planned would always attract the attention of tourists and world investors to Sokoto and the northern parts of the country.
