PDP chairman was in Niger State to reconcile aggrieved party members

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Adamu Mu’azu, on Friday held a closed-door meeting with former military president, Ibrahim Babangida, in Minna, the Niger State capital.

While in Minna, Mr. Mu’azu also met with the state governor, Babangida Aliyu.

The meeting with the former president was believed to be in continuation of the nationwide consultations with the elders and leaders of the party.

It is also believed to be in connection with the ongoing crisis in the ruling party, which has led to the defection of five of its governors, some federal and state lawmakers as well as council chairmen to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The PDP chairman, who assumed office about two weeks ago, had on January 26 visited former President Olusegun Obasanjo in the latter’s home in Ogun State where both also had a secret meeting.

Mr. Mu’azu, accompanied by a 15-member team, which included a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Na’abba, arrived Mr. Babangida’s Hilltop residence about 12:05 p.m. and left about one hour later.

The PDP national chairman told journalists after the meeting with the former military president that his visit to Minna was part of the efforts to reconcile aggrieved party members.

He said the meeting was fruitful but refused to give details of the parley.

“I am here in continuation of my visit to our elders and I had a fruitful meeting with the former president. It was a fruitful meeting,” Mr. Mu’azu said.

“What we discussed is not meant for public consumption. All I can say is that we had a fruitful discussion.”

Mr. Babangida also refused to speak on what he discussed with the PDP national chairman, saying, “I am not going to say a word. I am not talking.”
