Rivers ACN in dilemma over Amaechi

Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi
THE Action Congress of Nigeria is currently in a dilemma over the possibility of accepting the embattled Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, into the party, if the need arises.
There are speculation that Amaechi, who is currently going through challenges in the Peoples Democratic Party, may move to any of the opposition parties in no distant time.
It was gathered that several overtures had been made to ensure that Amaechi’s alleged defection to one of the opposition parties did not face any obstacle.
The state governor was recently suspended from the ruling party, following the suspension of Obio/Akpor Council Chairman, Mr. Timothy Nsirim.
However, the state ACN has set up a two-man delegation to meet with the national officers of the party over their different positions on the state governor.
In a statement by the state Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Jerry Needam, those nominated include the Leader of the ACN in Rivers, Dr. Abiye Sekibo, and its National Treasurer, Chief Kenneth Kobani.
“This is sequel to the state Executive Council meeting with all prominent members of the party on Sunday, May 2, 2013, which centred on the unilateral resolve by the ACN national to identify with and work for the interest of Governor Amaechi, who is entrapped in an intractable PDP crisis,” the statement read.
“Our position will be made public as soon as the committee is through with the meeting. We respectfully enjoin all members and party to remain calm and loyal as we are on top of the development,” the party assured.
Reacting to the state ACN’s position, the Chief Press Secretary to the state Governor, Mr. David Iyofor, described the allegation that Amaechi was about to leave the PDP for the ACN as a “mere rumour.”
Iyofor explained that the governor had not at anytime said he (Amaechi) was leaving the PDP for any other political party and insisted that the allegation was false.
