Nomadic Education Under A Tree
According to the National Commission for Nomadic Education (NCNE), the nomadic population in Nigeria accounts for 9.4 million; of which 3.1 million are school-age children. The majority of them are pastoralists (7 million), while others are migrant fisher folk and farmers. The participation of the nomads in existing formal and non-formal education programmes is still extremely low.
The NCNE is charged with the implementation of the Nomadic Education Programme (NEP), which is aimed at providing and widening access to quality basic education for nomads boosting literacy and equipping them with skills and competences to enhance their well-being and participation in nation-building.
Importantly, only 110 out of the over 250 Nomadic schools completed but the remaining schools were operating under trees, zinc shed and locally made sheds, findings by the Leadership can authoritatively revealed.
Further investigation discovered that out of the 110 schools some of them were damaged by rain and storm in the state.
Contacted for comment, the Executive secretary of the Nomadic Education Board Alhaji Ali Mamu who confirmed the development assured that those uncompleted schools will be completed this year.
Alhaji Manu stated that more schools will soon be constructed in the state with a view to overcome the problems of nomadic schools in the state.
He said, among the 110 nomadic schools, some were damage during the raining season assuring that all the damage and dilapidated ones will be renovated this year.
He said that the board purchased teaching materials, schools uniform and schools facilities worth over N27million and distributed to various Nomadic schools across the state.
Alhaji Ali Manu stated that 7 nomadic schools were constructed at various strategic locations in the state with additional of 81 literacy classes for both women and men were established across the state with a view to educate children of the Fulani Nomads in the state.
He said the board has also established enlightenment committee which will educate members of Miyatti Allah cattle rears on the importance of acquiring western education.
Alhaji Manu explained that as a result of that development, educational campaign was organized by the board of which a total of 250 schools for nomadic children were recently established in the state.
He said that his board made a total enrolment of 40,000. Nomadic pupils in the state pointed out that over 280 nomadic teachers in the state were now receiving training on various field of education so as boost their educational standard.
The executive secretary further stated that 35 motorcycles were recently purchased and distributed to schools inspector across the state for the purposed of monitoring the nomadic schools activities.
He further stated that the board in collaboration with the state water board was able to drilled 50 number of boreholes at various nomadic schools with a view to eradicate water shortage in the affected school adding that dilapidated ones will be renovated this year.
He promised to provide soft loan to nomadic women in the state with a view to allow their children to attend schools as part of encouragement to Fulani women of which goats and sheep will give to them as loan.
